Two days after sources reported RB Brian Westbrook would sign with the St. Louis Rams, Westbrook signed with the San Fransisco 49ers. The deal is for one-year and is worth up to $2.5 million.
This is a glorified insurance policy for 49ers. Even though 49ers RB Frank Gore is the unquestioned franchise player, the surprising retirement of second-year RB Glen Coffee has left a void at the back-up running back spot. This move fits both Westbrook and the 49ers well.
The first game Westbrook is available to play in will be when the 49ers host the Vikings this Sunday, August 22.
Westbrook will help the 49ers improve, but how much can he really help a team that ranked 25th in rushing last season? Probably not enough to make a significant difference. Still, if you’re the 49ers, you needed to make this move.
Put it this way…would you rather have Brian Westbrook or Michael Robinson backing up Frank Gore?
Westbrook was released by the Eagles after playing in only nine games last season due to multiple concussions, as well as other injuries. He will turn 31 on September 2.
Westbrook ranks sixth in career yards from scrimmage among *active running backs.
